Case Study

Designated a model cleanup by state and local agencies, this project involved a closed landfill that was redeveloped with single-family residences. Our work included extensive regulatory management activities and litigation support. All environmental activities were highly scrutinized by the public, media, regulatory agencies, and other consultants. Intensive reviews of historical documents and aerial photographs were performed to develop a strategy for remedial investigations. Based on these reviews, as well as on-site surveys of surface water, soil, soil gas, indoor air, groundwater, and leachate, several operable units were identified and interim remedial excavation and removal activities were conducted. Other interim measures involved the removal of underground storage tanks, debris, tanning wastes, scrap metal, tires, and affected soils. A feasibility study was conducted to evaluate several remedial alternatives for the remaining areas. The recommended alternative included excavation and off-site disposal of wastes, soil-gas extraction and treatment, and in situ stabilization of affected soil and wastes.
