Case Study
This project involved an assessment of waste classification and disposal options for a complex waste stream consisting of ash, digester sludge, and tannery wastes at a former landfill. At the commencement of the project, it was assumed by the lead regulatory agency and the proposed disposal facility that approximately 80,000 tons of waste would most appropriately be managed as hazardous waste. In accordance with U.S. Environmental Agency guidelines, Northgate collected waste samples using a random sampling method. Northgate conducted a rigorous statistical evaluation of the data to profile wastes for disposal purposes. Based on our analysis, only 40 percent of the landfill wastes were classified as hazardous waste; the remaining 60 percent was classified as Class II alternative daily cover. As a result of the more accurate classification, Northgate saved the client approximately $2.5 million in waste disposal costs.
